It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of William "Bill" Everett Sharp Jr., an esteemed adjunct professor and alumnus of the George Washington University's Center for Excellence in Public Leadership (GW CEPL). Bill passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 71, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill’s connection to GW CEPL began as a member of Cohort 18 of the Program for Excellence in Municipal Management (PEMM), where he first made a lasting impression with his leadership and dedication. He was also an alumnus of the Senior Leader Program (SLP) and went on to share his knowledge and experience as an instructor in several of our programs, including the Master’s in Public Leadership and the Regional Executive Development Program (REDP).
A devoted public servant, Bill’s remarkable career spanned five decades in the Washington, D.C., area. His federal government work included serving as the Assistant Inspector General for Management and Support for the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), an independent federal oversight agency. He also worked as Procurement Manager for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Office of Procurement and Materials, where he contributed to significant projects such as the construction of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.
Bill was more than a skilled professional; he was a beloved mentor and colleague known for his wisdom, humor, and boundless kindness. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a treasured member of the GW CEPL community. His humor, warmth, and dedication to leadership education left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of learning from him.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on January 18, 2025, at the Southside Chapel of Altmeyer Funeral Home in Virginia Beach, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the SPCA, organizations close to Bill’s heart.
The entire GW CEPL community extends our heartfelt condolences to Bill's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We honor his life, his contributions, and the indelible mark he left on our programs and beyond.
