Nancy Potok, Ph.D.

Background

Dr. Nancy Potok is the Chief Statistician of the United States and the Chief of Statistical and Science Policy at the US Office of Management and Budget.  Previously, she served as the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the US Census Bureau (2012-2017). Dr. Potok has over 30 years of leadership experience in the public, non-profit, and private sectors.  She has served as the Deputy Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the US Department of Commerce; the Principal Associate Director and Chief Financial Officer as well as the Associate Director for Demographic  Programs at the US Census Bureau; Senior Vice President for Economic, Labor, and Population Studies at NORC at the University of Chicago; and the Chief Operating Officer of McManis & Monsalve Associates,  a start-up business analytics and management consulting firm.  She is an adjunct professor at the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at The George Washington University, where she has taught in the M.P.A. and M.P.P. programs since 2011. Early in her career she was a Presidential Management Fellow, an analyst on federal transportation programs at the US Office of Management and Budget, and the Deputy Assistant Director for Finance and Budget at the Administrative Office of the US Courts.
 
Dr. Potok is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.  She has been a member of several expert panels tackling issues faced by federal agencies including the National Center for Education Statistics, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Prisons, and Administrative Office of the US Courts. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), the Board of Trustees for the Arthur S. Flemming Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by federal employees with fewer than 15 years of service, and the Trachtenberg School Advisory Board, as well as serving on several other boards over the years. She is the recipient of the Enterprise Risk Manager of the Year Award given by the Association for Federal Enterprise Risk Management, the Secretary of Commerce Gold Medal and Silver Medal for outstanding achievements, the Arthur S. Flemming Award, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from The George Washington University.  She is a member of the American Statistical Association and has published and presented papers at numerous national and international conferences, most recently leading the US delegation to the United Nations Statistical Commission’s annual meeting. Dr. Potok earned her B.A. at Sonoma State University, her M.A. at the University of Alabama, and her Ph.D. in public policy and administration at The George Washington University. Her doctoral area of emphasis was program evaluation, and her dissertation research focused on identifying and eliminating  barriers to linking administrative and survey data in the federal environment.
