Deputy Director for Strategy, Aeronautics Research Directorate, NASA Langley Research Center

Michelle Ferebee Michelle is currently the Deputy Director for Strategy in the Aeronautics Research Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center. In this position, she aligns and advocates the use of Langley's research assets to potential partners from academia and industry to advance fundamental research in support of NASA's aeronautics strategy.

Michelle began her career at NASA 35 years ago as a computer scientist where she developed data visualization tools for the interpretation of scientific data. She also served as Head of the Atmospheric Sciences Data Center, a data processing and archival center for satellite telemetry. Michelle moved out of research for a few years to become the NASA Agency Program Manager for the Aerospace Education Services Project, which provided a wide variety of STEM education services for educators and students in higher education, from kindergarten to graduate school.

Prior to her current position, Michelle served as the Manager of the Business Development Office at NASA Langley Research Center. Her organization was responsible for the creation, implementation and execution of business development processes at the Center as well as developing and sustaining strategic partnerships with industry, academia and other governmental organizations.

Michelle is author and co-author of numerous technical publications and has presented her research at national and international conferences. Michelle has received several NASA awards, including a NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal. She has been recognized by the YWCA as a “Woman of Distinction”. Michelle is also a recipient of the Women of Color in STEM award for her corporate responsibility. Throughout her career, Michelle has mentored students of all ages, as well as early career NASA employees. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Living Museum, and is Chair of the Economic Development Authority Board for the city of Hampton, VA. Michelle is also a member of The Links, Incorporated, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary. Michelle received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the College of William and Mary. She and her husband Melvin have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
