Karin Tovar Cardenas is the Program Assistant of the GW Center for Excellence in Public Leadership where she assists with program administration and marketing efforts.
 
Prior to joining the Center, she worked on developing strategic planning to reach the Hispanic community through educational theater. She has also worked as a consultant, teaching Spanish as a second language and Hispanic culture at various government agencies in Guatemala. Karin has also worked for numerous local nonprofit organizations, providing therapy to the immigrant communities in the Washington, DC, area. Her high levels of empathy for those in need is rooted in her upbringing, and her immigration journey from Guatemala to the United States.
 
Karin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from the Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala, and has a former career in media broadcasting. She is currently a candidate for a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at GW, and is inclined toward holistic approaches. She has been a research assistant volunteer with Dr. Huynh-Nhu Le of the Department of Psychology at the Latino Couple’s Project since 2015. She was the co-author of a poster presented at the Society for Prevention Research in San Francisco, CA.  
  
Karin is also an entrepreneur by heart. In 2011 she had founded her company, Spanish Opens Doors, which she closed when she entered graduate school. Drawing on her background in arts and well-being, she also founded the GW Argentine Tango Club, a student club that fosters diversity through social dancing and networking. Karin is fluent in English and Spanish.
